This photo-book was published by the town-council as a representative publication.
The book wasn´t practically distribute because the town-council regarded the photos as unsuitable.
Distributed was only about 100-150 copies.

The photos by Viktor Kolar are very suggestive and truly appositive the real face of Ostrava town.

Viktor Kolář * 1941

Born in OSTRAVA – an industrial city of coal mines and foundries located near the borders of Poland and Slovakia.
For most of his creative life Ostrava is the central theme of all of photographic work.
Father, who was self-taught photographer and filmmaker himself passed his interest in photography on his son at the age of thirteen. Also father´s library, particularly the books on photography encouraged his interest in photography.

1956 - 67 Became acquainted with images of Henri Cartier-Bresson
1959 Joined Vítkovice Steel Works Camera club.Made friends with some of the members . Encountered photos of Bruce Davidson made with available light. For one year he took up job in Vítkovice Iron works.
1960 - 64 Studied at the School of Education in Ostrava to become a teacher
1964 First solo exhibition of 6O photographs / street children and industrial landscapes/.
1964 - 68 Taught at elementary school, did compulsory military service, worked as a librarian. Decided to devote fully his life to photography. Influential were Libor and Anna Fárovi during 1967-68
1968 Made several important photographs. After defeat of Prague´s spring by russian invasion emigrated to Canada. Working in mines, metallurgical work, a photolaboratory. Received also grants supporting photo projects. Prior to returning home after 5 years of exile exhibited a photographic project on supermarkets at Gallery Optica in Montreal.
1973 After return from exile worked in a steel mill and as set mover at the theatre.
1984 - 94 Ten years of freelancing
1994 Teaching at the Film and Tv Academy for Performing Arts in Prague seminars on documentary photography

Photographic work was widely exhibited in the cities like: Amsterdam,Athens, Berlin,Dortmund,Frankfurt, Lausanne, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland,Prague
His photographs are in public collections of : the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Center of Photography in NYC, the Musée de l´Elysée in Lausanne,The Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the National Film Board of Canada in Ottawa and others.
Also in the permanent collections of Umeleckoprumyslového Muzea v Praze, the Moravian Gallery in Brno…
Award: in 1991 received the International Documentary Photography Award of The Mother Jones Foundation in San Francisco
